I was able to do this years ago with UA miles on a CDG to NRT flight upgrading from J to F. F was wide open on the flight and I booked it in a high fare class (C or D) as it was last minute.

Usually for most *A carriers, the booking fare class has to be pretty darn high for *A upgrades to be eligible. Some good threads in the UA forum about upgrades on various *A carriers.
