One of the best in-flight meals I ever had was when I had to purchase pre-flight my own food - in December 1977 on a GBP59 one-way Y Laker Airways Skytrain LGW-JFK flight, where meals were available on-board for purchase only.
I wouldn't expect to have to do the same on a BA F flight costing considerably more!
