I am surprised everyone left out South Florida. It provides a simultaneous experience of the best and worst in highways.

Best - smooth, well maintained roads, wide lanes, etc.

Worst - as soon as people drive on it.

The drivers down here are generally insane and make for a harrowing experience. Drivers in the left passing lane go under the speed limit, while drivers in the right hand slow lanes blast past at 30 miles over the limit. I have seen drivers on I95 during rush hour spread a newspaper across the steering wheel and dash board and read while driving at 65 mph, and I have seen drivers on the Turnpike pull down the visor mirror and paint on their makeup while blasting down the road at 70+ mph completely oblivious to everything around them.

I95 down here is also somewhat clairvoyant - it can somehow detect which direction of traffic has the highest number of drivers in a hurry trying to get somewhere by a specific time and brings traffic to a halt in that direction for no apparent reason. Accidents happen constantly throughout the day as cars bounce off each other like pingpong balls and people stand at the side of the road with their wrecked cars looking bewildered how their incompetent driving resulted in the accident and backlog of traffic stretching for miles.

Then there is the road debris - since nothing ever gets cleaned off the road, people are on the news having been beheaded or impaled by something that a semi truck kicked up off the pavement and sent flying through the windshield of the car behind.

Most local folks down here are familiar with SR 826, a road in Dade County that has such horrific driving on it, that the best and most experienced driver could be reduced to tears.

So, if you want a real experience in bad roads, come on down to South Florida...there is plenty to choose from.
