Called AA Awards. Explained that my girlfriend couldn't come because of the travel ban, and requested they cancel her ticket & refund the miles w/o penalty.

I think and hope that
AlwaysAisle was kidding, but taking advantage of AA's human decency to a group of people who can't/shouldn't/are legitimately afraid to go on a routine vacation from their legal home to get out of an AAdvantage change fee is not an avenue I personally want to go down. Those who are affected by this have enough to deal with; encouraging AA to make it more difficult for them by lying to try to take advantage of this kindness is seriously harmful.
