In-flight communications
An area in which AA seems to be quickly and disappointingly falling behind is in-flight communication technology.
Gone are the days (on other carriers, at least) where a "ship-to-shore" call is a fortune. I can get onto just about any other major's aircraft and make an Airfone call for $0.69 per minute as a Verizon Wireless customer - I can remember when regular cell phone calls cost more than that. Not so on AA, where the best I can hope for is to be on a 767 or 777 and use their satellite service for $10/min and $5 cxn fee. No way.
Verizon's JetConnect product is also outstanding - less than $10 for the whole flight to catch up on email and the news! And United gives it to their 1Ks for free! Nothing doing on AA.
Certainly not enough to make me jump ship to a competitor, but I'm wondering why AA feels it can rest on its laurels here and not catch up with the crowd??
