Um, no one is forcing you to connect through ATL. Both MSP and DTW have reasonable connecting service from LAX to CMH and to many other eastern cities. Also check for flights through SLC. Other than that, you can try to avoid popular business travel times/dates by flying, Tue, Wed, Sat. Reserve card can help a little, but there will probably be very few flights where it comes down to that tie breaker.
