I've reviewed this and other threads and sense that on LHR-JNB the 330-200 is newer than the 340-400, and better in J, as of a few years ago.

But what about Y, and in 2017? I need some clear and current advice, please.

I'd also be interested in loads. Would there be more space on SAA 235 or 237, generally? I'm thinking about my chances of either an empty seat next to me in Y, or a miraculous op-up to J (*A gold, though 100k).
I did a JNB turn a couple of weeks ago, and had one of each (330/340). The 330 maybe feels a little newer, but I think the 340 has maybe an extra inch of legroom... but not a big enough difference to override timing (for me).

No idea which is busier - I've always found the SAA flights quieter than the BA flights, and they always seem to be more tourist rather than business-oriented... more backpacks and fewer wheelies, which makes the overhead bins much less full. Never had an op-up in maybe 20 trips over the last 3 years as *G, but they seem to be quite good at giving you an empty seat beside you [two weeks ago there were a load of Saffas heading back after holidays in the UK, and I had one of 3 or 4 empty seats next to me].
