I will be travelling from Europe to Sydney and only NRT - SYD was downgraded. The ticket is AA award. Since AA mixed class booking costs the same amount of miles, I cannot claim anything from AA. You are out of luck. AA is the one responsible for compensating you for a scheduled (i.e. well in advance) downgrade, and all they will offer is the difference in miles. Which, as you state, is 0.
I was in a similar situation (AA reward on CX) last year and I got nothing.
