Nope, Hawaii doesn't work that way (as an allowed stopover on a North America-XXX itinerary). missydarlin confirmed that for me a while back.

It can be a destination (XXX-SEA(stop)-Hawaii) or origin if the award type allows it (for instance, Alaska awards to/from Europe using AA can originate or end in Hawaii for no extra miles- essentially, if you stop over in the gateway you get a one way to Hawaii for free), but not an international gateway or stopover.

I guess AS is protecting their award inventory/revenue on Hawaii. They're pretty generous for a lot of other things (*cough*stopover*cough*) so I don't exactly blame them for that one.
