I try to find a 4 segments flights (both way).
I do this for my MQM (to reach Diamond).
If you're trying to maximize MQM, the number of segments really doesn't matter, the routing does.
PVG may not be the best destination since you'll have to add visa costs (unless you already have one) or take a more expensive routing to qualify for a transit visa.
