I looked at the dates far out. Almost 80% of the cabin was booked already with EWR/IAD-HNL routes. Very difficult to see R inventories around.
One of my flights, IAH-SFO in a 787, has the upgrade list of 50 people deep. I booked the flights pretty late, so I didn't even think of getting the upgrade unless I am paying for the last seat in the 3.5hour flight for $450USD.
I received the first ever op-up in the UA system, HKG-SIN this year, but I believe I wouldn't be able to clear a lot of domestic trips this year.
It isn't just domestic where R is nonexistent. Last year, by planning and purchasing more than 4 months in advance, I was able to secure mileage upgrades at purchase for IAD-MUC and IAD-FRA for midweek flights. I just tried to replicate last year's travel, and everything is R=0. Even when there J/D/Z/C are all >9 and no seats reserved.
I sure am glad I am no longer 1K sitting on GPUs that can no longer be used to secure upgrades at purchase.
