To me , it seems that the easiest and best thing in these cases is just to book the lower price. where a place will beat a competitor's price it can be worth trying, but why go through the risk and effort to just get what can be bought directly

These guarantees are generally, imo, to discourage people from looking elsewhere rather than genuinely that the company intends to not be beaten
