That's surprising. If your driver's license and credit card are up-to-date then you should be skipping the counter at Gold locations, especially if you already stopped at the counter once so they could scan your credit card.

As to your question of doing a weekend HLE rental, it certainly couldn't hurt, but in all honesty shouldn't be necessary.
