I had 3 single nights booked this week (I ended up staying nights 1 and 3) and quite often do this, albeit with the same hotel.
Despite them knowing I do this, as I have an often unpredictable schedule, I always call just to make sure, else it is a hassle undoing as they used to do what the OP indicates.
So my tip would be to call, or e-mail.
