My take is only merge if specifically requested by the guest. There could be a variety of reasons a guest has made multiple single night reservations. As you note, the hotel probably did it w/ the best of intentions.

Like MSP I've not been able to get them to merge in advance. I normally have to get it sorted at check-in.
