My take is only merge if specifically requested by the guest. There could be a variety of reasons a guest has made multiple single night reservations. As you note, the hotel probably did it w/ the best of intentions.

I've had several bad problems in the other direction where I made separate reservations due to rate plan availability and despite repeated requests, no one was able to successfully merge them.
Like MSP I've not been able to get them to merge in advance. I normally have to get it sorted at check-in.
