ANYONE IN THE WORLD could call up and say "Hey, it's so-and-so from Big Hotel. We had a problem with your credit card number. Please give us another one." In seconds, they now have all your info.
If the caller had my name, check-out date, account balance, and already had my earlier credit card number, I'd probably assume it was legit. Especially if they were telling me my CC was denied and I knew I'd canceled the card right after that stay. If I remotely smelled a rat, I could always just hang up and phone the hotel right back to see if my hunch was right.

So I'd just give them the new CC number and be done with it. In the 0.00001% chance this was some elaborate insider scam by someone in the accounting department at the hotel, the basic single-stolen-CC-number is one of the easier data breaches to fix with minimal liability to the cardholder.

I suppose I might be a little on edge after I'd just had to reset a bunch of my cards, but at some point paranoia prevents you from living your life...
