So, what your saying is someone can read something you wrote that informs people of your name and where you stayed. Or heck, they could've stayed in the hotel, and overheard your name and/or other info. A quick internet search usually reveals your phone number. ANYONE IN THE WORLD could call up and say "Hey, it's so-and-so from Big Hotel. We had a problem with your credit card number. Please give us another one." In seconds, they now have all your info.
No, they'd have my credit card...and if there were fraudulent charges, I'd dispute them. Simple as that. I check my accounts every day because I do shop online. Call it a safety habit.
Did they try calling you? Do you answer all your calls from unknown numbers? Did they send an email you missed? There could be multiple explanations about what happened and how it got to this point.
I am an attorney that travels across the country for paranoid people that use burner phones. I always answer the phone because...well, you never know who it is. Hell, the gov't agency I deal with prolifically uses NO CALLER ID when calling me. And I check all my email accounts every day. I assure you, when I state that there has been no communication, there has been no communication.
And when you stated your credit card was closed (which was extremely useful info regarding this situation), it's possible that because of the Hilton connection to your credit card, your HHonors account was suspended as well. Which, honestly, was a good thing, because if you had an issue that involved multiple accounts, then it stands to reason that your HHonors account could have been affected as well. Unfortunately, you hyperventilated and assumed your entire account was deleted and wiped away, probably adding to some of the other confusion regarding the situation. When you made phone calls regarding your other credit card accounts, a phone call to HHonors informing them of the issue would have probably resolved the situation much quicker.\
FYI the credit card itself was placed into a locked mode...I can still access that account on Citi's website. Citi REPLACED the credit card. I did NOT close my credit card account. I merely changed cards due to some extraneous fraudulent activity that happened 4 days later. Finally, why would I call HHonors about credit card fraud? Citi's Hilton Reserve is a one way street. Hilton does not talk to Citi and vice versa. They are not the same company and HIlton does not directly service Citi's credit cards. Why on earth would I have contacted them? By that logic, anytime a credit card is stolen, you should call probably the last 10 retailers you shopped at.
