However the disadvantage far outweigh it especially awards rarely booked initially with optimal routing / dates. Airlines also would change schedules / cancel flights. Over the course from initial booking to finally starting the trip - I would venture to say an award often goes thru multiple voluntary / involuntary changes. Much easier to have each award separately ticketed to facilitate the inevitable future changes.
