That seems to be very true. Thanks for the responses everyone. I am a little peeved that they wouldn't even respond to my requests to have the miles' expiration extended due to my mis-understanding the T&Cs. A polite no would have at least been better than silence. Looks like I am out of luck as my first batch expire the end of March so I can't get three billing cycles in before then. I am guessing it is sheer coincidence that they notify you of the expiration occuring once it is already too late to do anything about it.
