If AS started planning on long haul TPAC routes 10-15 years ago, especially before DL's establishing its TPAC hub at SEA, we could see AS building a hub/fortress at SEA and potentially dominated the long haul market here. If a "missed opportunity" makes one profitable over more than a decade, able to expand in multiple domestic markets (SEA, PDX, SJC, SAN), with more to come (SFO, LAX), then by all means AS shouldn't hesitate to miss opportunities.
You know who went bankrupt the last fifteen years? AA, UA, DL. Airlines who took the "oppportunity" to fly expensive planes longhaul. You know who didn't? WN and B6, who didn't.
