Smile Just did the LHR-LGW transfer in early April

We arrived in LHR around 11 on a Saturday morning, and the taxi to LGW was £110 (about $200) which took about an hour. All BA flight depart from the north terminal. Since there were three of us traveling, I didn't really look into public transportation figuring whatever the cost times three means the savings relative to the taxi is not worth risking the extra time. In hind sight, I thought that was the correct decision. We spent an hour at the arrival lounge, took showers, got some hot breakfast, then about an hour on the cab, 15 minutes for the LGW bag drop, another hour at the LGW lounge, and time to walk to the gate for our flight.

Since our flight originated in SFO, we were checked in all the way to Venice, but still have to claim our bags in LHR, clear immigration and custom, and then check the bags at LGW's fast bag drop. Even though we flew BA first class on the SFO-LHR segment, and were ticketed LGW-VCE in Business, they still made us weight our carry-on, and we ended up having to check all of our roll-aboards. BA did, however, give us a dispoable carry-on bag for my laptop so that I can bring it into the cabin. I believe the weight light for carry-ons are 6 kg for coach, and 12 kg for the front cabin.

Unfortunately they lost one of our checked bags (actually left it behind in LGW), but delivered it to our hotel the next day. We wasted about an hour waiting for all the bags, and then searching in the misplaced bag pile, waiting in the lost-bag queue, and finally filing a lost-bag report.

We used the BA LHR arrival lounge in Terminal 1, it is upstairs in the departure hall, in zone R, next to the premium check-in area. Hot breakfast items are available before noon, showers and Molton Brown massages are also available in the arrival lounge, as well as highspeed internet access terminals. I believe BA also has an arrival lounge in Terminal 4.

BA at LGW has a very nice Terrace lounge as well as a First lounge. The first lounge offers pre-flight dining, while the Terrace lounge have regular snack items.

Make sure you have your EXP card with you, since many people reported that having your One-World status on the boarding pass is usually not sufficient for entrance to the BA lounges.
