With EQDs presumably being the tiebreaker within a purchased cabin and status level.
I expect #1 to be the more likely candidate for the upgrade priority because I fully expect that status will still be the primary factor first for upgrade priority. The only caveat that AA stated for 2017 and going forward that is different from 2016 and before is that Status + EQDs from the last 12 months will decide the priority within the same level (e.g: An EXP with $30K in spending will trump an EXP in $15K spending but both will trump a Plat even if they spent $35K last year).
