OP, jsloan has an excellent writing for your friend. He/she only needs to expand the details slightly (e.g., Juneyao flights numbers and date; mentioning that UA phone agent was very helpful to rebook the flight to BKK!). Hopefully, UA will give some token-of-appreciation miles. Good luck.
