Yes, I need to use BA metal (or at least a BA flight code) to use the 2-4-1, which rules out the better options of ex Dub or ex Mad for a transatlantic flight.
looks like my original idea wasn't too bad, although I like the idea if F instead if J, I'll get spending to get those miles (and work on work travel approval from my boss, that would help!)
How about F out, J return ? you get the best of F in a day time flight, then most likely sleep on a sleeper service J return so you're not missing out on much but have the benefit of a flat bed. That was my original redemption to BOS, as that is all that was available ! But when they changed the return aircraft to the A380, F availability opened up. So I had to have it ! Would save you a few Avios I suppose, but as others have pointed out, the same taxes.
