potentially they could have as long as it was an 016 ticket, but complicating factors include:
- On day of travel, AC as the operating carrier with the first flight that hadn't yet left was in charge at that point and is the one responsible for the OP - UA could potentially make the change, but they also would have every right to say "go to AC, they are responsible for taking care of you"
- If OP was checked in already, they would need to have AC cancel the check in (UA potentially could do that for the onward segments operated by them, but not the AC segment). UA wouldn't be able to touch the ticket until that happened.
