Officially, mileage upgrades don't go to the gate, but there are plenty of experiences posted here (especially JFK-SFO/LAX) that suggest otherwise.

That having been said, I believe that mileage is seen as a form of currency and is slightly prioritized over instruments when request do carry over, but anyone can feel free to correct me on this last point.
