Personally, RFS via London a waste of time (literally!) and money. Quicker, cheaper and direct with the low-cost carriers. Even with pre-paid seat reservations in exit row!

(And if you are really well organised, make your own Club Europe by buying an extra seat and doing online hand-baggage only check-in for it. For two people in the same row, it is only a 50% surcharge!)

For long-haul, I like to get 2p or so value for my avios - based on what I would have paid anyway, not what a last-minute full fare First would have cost!

To be frank, for New York, get a direct flight in economy from central Scotland. Cheap as chips at the right time. No transfers etc.

I now don't bother earning 241s and save my BA PP fees. So my winner is Iberia from MAD (try South America!) maybe to Los Angeles, with Easyjet from EDI (much cheaper car parking than GLA!) to MAD and an overnight with great food. IB business is great.

Check IB avios MAD to LAX compared to BA!
2-4-1's require BA metal
