This part of the story made me cringe since I remember being in a similar situation (when I was much younger and an inexperienced traveler). In my case the man spit on the floor after he shouted "not my problem". (I think he was aiming for my shoe but I jumped out of the way).
Never EVER connect in mainland China! That's why its always cheapest, with available UA UGs and award tickets on Air China -- because nobody wants to do it!
