HO is not yet a *A connecting partner, though it is planned. That being said, I did ORD-PVG(UA)-XIY(HO) a few months ago, and even for this experienced, 3+MM GS, it was a challenge. Essentially, two separate trips despite being on a single PNR. I had to pass through immigration/customs at PVG, exit, and re-enter the domestic terminal at the HO check-in counter.

As others have stated, avoid China-based transfers if at all possible.
