The reason p.s. exists on NYC-CA routes is not because people are willing to pay more -- but rather because there are people whose work provides them no option but to buy those seats. That is why that service is able to exist.

Where UA has to rely on the willingness of people to choose for themselves to buy those seats, history has shown that the willingness is not high enough for those economics to work.
