Was this the Toei and Tokyo Metro pass that retails for 1,000 yen? At full price, it would pay off if you were to take >5 subway rides in central Tokyo. It isn't valid on JR.
There are cheaper passes that are valid on only one subway company and more expensive passes that are valid on a wider range of public transportation. Most of the time, I find that it's a better value to use a stored value card (e.g. Suica or Passmo) and pay individual fares.
