AS Elite Gifts gone in 2016/ 2017

There used to be elite gifts given out to AS Golds/ 75Ks at the end of the year. The gifts for golds were a choice of 2 Gold Guest Upgrades or 2 Board Room (Lounge) Passes, or GOGO internet passes. I used to print those things out. I don't know what I got last year.
I noticed that this past December, I received no email on the gifts. A couple of weeks ago, I sent an email to AS customer care- inquiring on when I was going to get my elite gift choice (I am currently an AS Gold).
It took about 2 weeks for them to get back to me. I got the strangest email response from AS customer service.
The response was- "Due to the behind the scenes efforts in the AS and Virgin merger, all their resources were exhausted and elite gifts would be issued this year".
The gift choices are electronic and the cost is negligible. I find this bizarre.
I spoke with some AS employees that I know and I told them of this. I asked them "What if AS cut the profitability bonuses for the merger reason?"
The response from the employees was "I think there would be a riot at the corporate office."
Anyone else have any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them. Thanks
