The approved screen looked customized for O'Reilly (also saying "remove card") but the authorizing screen appeared to be something provided by the POS vendor. I'd have imagined the transaction would have been cancelled as soon as I removed the card during the latter screen if Quick Chip wasn't in play.

I get it, hesitantly I get it. I think it's best to have a physical contactless Amex AND a Mastercard for travel. Visa is useless, ofc. Except the Schwab Visa because they pay ATM fees.
Realistically, most people are likely using a mobile wallet with their AmEx cards instead of requesting the physical version as the latter option isn't well known. In fact, I'm still expecting physical contactless cards in general to be fairly uncommon in the US at least for the short to medium term because the "standard" contactless option is effectively mobile wallets.
