Before you head to Makawao for massages, stop in Haiku at Haiku Maui Orchids. (Call for directions and make sure they're open.) They can package orchids up to ship directly to your mom or, depending on how many days you're on Kauai, you can carry them on with you. (They have the stamp so no prob with ag. You wouldn't want to leave them in the box more than 3 days though and you can't open the box once it's been sealed and stamped as being nematoad free.)
Alan and Norman own the place and are great guys. My son just spent a day working at their greenhouse. They do a lot of hybridizing so you'll find some unusual things. They're also from New York so will be familiar with what your mom will be able to grow there. Their prices are also very low for orchids.

Of course, Maui is also known for proteas. I love these as cut flowers and always buy them that way. (I can get them here in California, but they sell them cut for you to bring home at the airports in Hawaii.) There are many protea farms that will sell you living plants and ship them, but I've never had success growing them. At the size they sell them you also won't see a bloom for at least 10 years if the plant survives that long. The protea arrangements are very beautiful and you could send your mom one of those. You can dry proteas when the blooms start to fade.
Just to perk up our room, I always pick up a protea arrangement at Costco in Maui when we arrive. The arrangements are beautiful, will last and last and are really inexpensive. You can't take those home though because they don't have the ag stamp.
