Upgrades are hard to get. If you get AA status that will give you some upgrade instruments depending on what status you get. If going to a destination by a Oneworld airline, other than AA, look for a straight out award, but that can also be hard.
Still having ff miles in Star Alliance, Skyteam Alliance or non alliance airline ffp is OK, but do not spread your miles to thinly so they are of little value.
