In the circumstances, and armed with a police report, it may be worth contacting BA. If there are solid legal or immigration reasons (such as being unable to get documentation to permit return travel) why your friend needs to remain in Thailand, BA might be sympathetic to a no or lower cost change.

Otherwise, as others have said, every ex-EU I've bought from a variety of countries has a €300 change fee plus fare difference.
