We have that turned on, but how do you actually tell if it's being backed up successfully. On my iphone, it tells you when the last backup was done.

Also there's a setting I noticed to restore app data when an app is updated (or something like that). that defaults to off. Should we turn that on?

I think the developer menu gave me an encryption option also, but I didn't mess with it. (If it was my phone I might have tried turning it on, but didn't want to mess with her phone too much.)

Is the N5X still under warranty, just in case & have a spare phone to use? Coming from MM 6.x or 7.0 - always backup any important data, doc's & pictures, etc. on the SD card partition first and make sure battery is at least 75% charged.
Yes, still under warranty. She has her old Samsung J7 from Thailand, a nice dual SIM phone built for India and Thailand, but it doesn't work very well in the US (it doesn't support enough LTE bands for t-mo, etc).

Photos are all stored using google photos, so they are all in the cloud.

Anyway thanks for the info and suggestions, we'll give it a shot soon.
