Would be curious to know general strategies for getting vouchers on overbooked flights.

Even if I don't get the "how much would you be willing to accept" screen at check-in, if I know the plane is full with a lot of standby is it worth just asking the GA if they're looking for volunteers as soon as I get to the gate?
