When I was recently flying MSP/ATL/CDG, and my MSP/ATL flight was overbooked, I was told that it would have been too time consuming to locate my checked bag and take it off the flight, so, I wasn't considered for a volunteer.

<So, you may not be considered as a volunteer if your connecting flight is overbooked and you have checked bags going int'l>

So, I flew to ATL, and the ATL/CDG flight was overbooked, and got $1000 to NOT fly to Paris til the next day!

. . . . But the gate agent started the bidding at $400 - then $600 - - then $800 before it sparked an interest in a few people. Then, finally $1000, and she said that was the absolute highest they offer at ATL. Hmmmmmm.
