It seems like if they follow this logic for DEN, they could also follow it for busy routes like PDX-SFO, PDX-LAX, SEA-LAX, etc. Of course they don't because those are essential routes no matter how much competition there is. You would think Denver would be one of those as well. It's just a bizarre donut hole.
