The original philosophy was that all British and Irish airlines for European and domestic flights would use Terminal 1. This meant that all flights to Northern Ireland also left from Terminal 1 and security had to be beefed up.

Due to the higher security levels El Al and SAA also used Terminal 1. (SAA was a high risk airline during the apartheid years.)

But now I cannot explain the BA flight switches.
