That said, the *A page indicates that SA is intending to join the program. Should that come to pass then you're just up against the issue of needing business class award availability, which is no trivial task, but also not completely impossible assuming there is some flexibility.
I happened to be researching this question and according to the United website SAA now allows upgrades from Y/B and C/D fares, as well as from M fares on domestic flights:
