Well, SWU is the acronym for SystemWide Upgrade. And yes it can be used to upgrade on UA metal all the way from IAD to BKK...pending availability.
In terms of how many connections, someone else may better answer that. I have only used SWUs and the new eSWUs for 2 connections max...I (mainly my butt) can't handle the pain of more connections, longer flights for more miles as some of the flyers here can.
