CA, a Star Alliance member, owns a significant stake in CX. CX recently signed a JV with NZ, another Star Alliance member. Maybe the AC partnership is just another reflection that alliances don't mean as much as they did 10 years ago..
With QF choosing EK over its oneworld partners and AA being so weak on the west coast, I think CX is realizing that oneworld is no longer quite what it signed up for.
