Other equally-reputable sources, among them people who were actually on the charter, unequivocally say otherwise.
By all accounts, it would appear there was a mx-related 763>764 aircraft swap on the morning of departure, and UAL was not planning on such a short turn for the airplane back to scheduled pax operations. It's no secret that airplanes coming off sports charters usually require a bit more TLC before returning to the line.
Perhaps it wasn't deliberate, but it's completely possible that it was trashed a little bit more and treated worse then a usual charter because of their poor performance causing them to be in a worse then usual mood.
Considering OBJ punched a hole in a wall, I'm sensing there was some frustration among the Giants.
