The 50 nights vs 75 nights for qualification is significant -- thanks to all who have pointed that out. I'm actually hoping to travel /less/ this year, so if I went Marriott then I would be likely to miss platinum, but depending on what happens, much more likely if I prefer SPG.

To me, calculations of points/earnings aside:
I worked really hard to earn Plat at SPG. So I'm going to enjoy as much of it as possible before the programmes merge. And that obviously necessitates staying at SPG, primarily, for 2017.
