The 787 price was simply too high in the last round. I suspect Boeing will offer something more reasonable (that can actually compete with the 330NEO on acquisition cost) on the next RFP. Delivery would be in the 2024-2025 time frame when 787 slots are not remotely close to being as full as they are right now.
I honestly think that DL's last major wide-body RFP that netted Airbus the 330/350 order it was much more about timing then price.
I'm willing to bet the 787 was priced competitively, but their order book is so full that I doubt DL could have received the first one until late 2018 early 2019. I believe DL is set to get the first 350 fall of this year, beating Boeing to the punch by over a year. I recall that Boeing even offered some 777's cheap as a bridge until the 787's could be build for DL.
