I was wondering if others have had experience / suggestions for getting separate insurance for car hire excess. As I am HK based I would need an insurance which will cover me as an HK resident (and also would be driving on my HK licence).

My annual travel insurance will cover me up to HKD5k, but I'm in New Zealand over CNY where the excess is NZD2,000 for the cheapest car hire options. You can reduce that excess by paying additional (something like NZD20 - 50 a day).

Anyone aware of either separate single trip car insurance excess coverage or another travel insurance policy (for single trip), which has a higher excess?

I can buy world nomads insurance for two weeks for about USD70 and it includes car hire excess insurance coverage of up to $2,000 (which I presume is USD).
