Status doesn't override booking and fare rules. Unless there are any super sales ex BKK, starting your journey in KUL will make the flight cheaper than an straight out BKK-MEL.
By way of example the fares on offer at the moment (outbound JUL and return AUG) are:
- KUL-BKK-MEL (return TG business class) is USD1455
- BKK-MEL on its own is USD2503
