You would need to do the sums on what is better, which would depend on your capacity to pay cash fares and what your personal valuation of avios is. At minimum you can redeem avios for hotels or car hire at 0.58p/avios, so your LHR-NYC return is £3400+. You can often get an ex-DUB revenue J fare for not much more than that for 4, plus earning avios/TPs which may make it a better option.
